Insight into rebranding

We recently rebranded D Young & Co, a leading UK patent attorney. Rachel Daniels, D Young's business development manager, gives a very interesting insight into the whole process from the client perspective in this months PM Forum magazine. The PM Forum is the world’s largest and fastest growing community for professional services marketers.

Success breeds brand extension

"A stylish new hotel comes like a breath of fresh air," so said the Independent in February when the new Halcyon hotel opened in Bath. Having created the Halcyon brand to get the whole place off to a cracking start the nice people at the Halcyon have come back to us for the next project. As the hotel goes from strength to strength (it's the brand personality that does it!) we have been asked to brand the new basement cocktail bar. A great brand extension job to keep evolving the Halcyon personality.

Great result!

So it's that time of year again - A level results and all that associated drama.  Meanwhile, we've had our own 'A' star result. Following a highly competitive pitch we have just been awarded the Bath Spa University prospectus design tender for another 3 years. We’ve got a raft of creative ideas for ensuring that our client gets the maximum standout at all those recruitment fairs and such like.

British Glass Biennale 2010

The stupendous catalogue is at the printers in Italy (get a sneaky peak at the running sheets), the glitzy invites to the Private View are in the envelopes and all is set fair for the 2010 British Glass Biennale. It's a bit of a dream job working on this biennial project. The exhibits are always so intriguing and exciting that creative ideas flow like a proverbial river. The exhibition is running from 27 August to 11 September in Stourbridge, West Midlands

National Trust

With enviable statistics of over 3.6 million members, 55,000 volunteers, more than 14 million people visiting their pay for entry properties and an estimated 50 million visiting their open air properties, we are delighted to announce that we are working with the National Trust. We have been commissioned to design strategic internal communication material and are thoroughly enjoying working with the country's favourite charity.

It's a two year thing

We created and implemented an award-winning new brand identity for 2008 British Glass Biennale, the UK's biggest selling exhibition of contemporary glass. As you would expect the 2010 Biennale is on the brew and we are busy developing and evolving the brand to create impact for September. We're working on their sumptuous exhibition catalogue, associated advertising, marketing material and exhibition graphics.

The farming world

The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) is an Executive Agency of Defra and provides services such as rural payments, rural inspections and livestock tracing. They came to us to develop a range of internal communication material to illustrate organisational change. These included an organisation chart, supporting diagrams, a 'route map' of change and the development of a poster campaign and poster templates. All very straightforward requirements, but with the application of design, the diagrams translated hundreds of words into engaging and informative pictures that helped to smooth the path of change.

Harnessing ocean resources

Here in the southwest there is much activity in this sector.  We have recently started working with an ambitious engineering company who specialise in subsea production systems.  Our brief is all encompassing and includes re-branding and product naming to support strategic company development.

Finding solutions

The brief from our client St Mary's University College, London for the new post-graduate prospectus was challenging. It had to be smaller than the previous A4 design to save on production and postage costs. Folded leaflets and  a CD had to travel with the prospectus. It had to be sturdy to withstand international mailing tribulations, distinctive, on brand and inspiring.

The solution is a neat A5 format with a pocketed cover to hold accompanying leaflets and CD. There has been excellent feedback..."The postgrad prospectus has gone down very well," says Teresa Kelly of St Mary's.  "People have said it looks grown up, classy, professional, neat, attractive, formal, important, academic, serious, beautifully produced – all of which are good for a postgraduate prospectus."

Butterfly World Update

Yesterday (29 April) saw the official opening of phase II of Butterfly World. Attendees included Professor David Bellamy, one of the project's patrons (pictured with Bob Mytton, our creative director). The new signage was designed by Mytton Williams as part of our branding work for this exciting education and conservation project.

The eye-catching signs take the idea of the symmetry of butterfly wings and aid way-finding around the site. Also, they add excitement through the use of enlarged details in brilliant colour. Our work also included information boards, directional signage, advertisements and leaflets. You can see images of the new signs on our blog.

Branding in the IP world

It's not often you get called in to work with patent and trade mark attorneys! So, when D Young & Co commissioned us to re-brand their organisation we were delighted and intrigued to learn more about their world.

6 months of hard work in close association with a particularly interesting set of professionals has resulted in the launch of the new D Young & Co brand identity on 1 April 2010.

Now down to what we have actually done. The objective was to create a brand reflecting the company's distinctive pedigree with real impact. Branding development work has been applied to all printed collateral and an overhauled digital communications programme. This programme includes an integrated content managed website and appropriate social networking. Environmental signage for each of the company's locations has also been developed. It's been a fascinating project!

Biggest butterfly experience

Phase 2 of the 4 phase project to create the world's biggest butterfly experience is opening on 29 April.

Butterfly World is being established on a 27 acre near St Albans. We've been working on the brand development of the organisation and have created a new signage and way-finding system for the immense site. We've also designed exhibition and marketing material and are now working on the associated advertising.

This £27m world-class visitor attraction and conservation vehicle is supported by high profile patrons and trustees including Sir David Attenborough and Professor David Bellamy.

2010 Media Innovation Awards

We've been nominated in the print category for our work on the Bright event management brochure. The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 18 March. We won an award last year so here's hoping we can do the same again in 2010. The awards celebrate and promote the cream of the creative industries in the south west.

Cost Effective Marketing

Working with the BGB we have devised an eye-catching database marketing campaign which works across all media platforms.  This will be used to spread the news about the 'call for entries' and to promote the exhibition itself.  This way the campaign will be cost-effective and highly targeted – what more could any marketer want?
The British Glass Biennale is the UK’s premiere glass selling exhibition and is rapidly gaining international status as the leading showcase for British based makers.

The Exhibition runs from the 27th to the 30th of August.

Memorable internal comms

Good design is proven to benefit sales and profitability. The South West Design Programme helps businesses use design to improve their performance.

It's an extremely successful programme and our clients, the SWDP, wanted to communicate this success to the associates they work with. As ‘measuring' success is key to all design solutions we came up with the idea of an over large tape measure highlighting the individual business success stories. We added in facts and figures illustrating the impact design can have.

We packaged each ‘success' measure in a tube to achieve a memorable presentation piece.
